The Story Behind Katara Towers (2012 to 2022)
The story of Katara Towers began in May 2012 when Katara Hospitality unveiled the plan. It targeted a 2016 finish. Piling started in late 2013 and tenders for basement works followed in December 2014.
The budget grew along the way. An early tender notice put the cost near US$500 million while the final bill reached about US$600 million. Early plans also promised 614 rooms and branded residences plus an artificial beach island linked by bridges.
From Plan to World Cup Opening
The 2022 FIFA World Cup gave the project a hard deadline. The hotels welcomed FIFA officials and delegates in November 2022. Regular bookings opened in 2023. Not bad for a dual-branded hotel once slated for 2016.
Why the Name “Katara” Matters
Katara is no modern brand invention. The Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemy used the name for this land in the second century. Katara Hospitality borrowed that ancient label to tie the towers to Qatar’s deep roots.
Design Inspired by Qatar’s National Seal
Katara Towers borrow their shape from the crossed scimitars on the Qatar national seal. Dar Al-Handasah handled the architecture and German firm Kling Consult led the early design. The result is a pair of blades that lean toward each other.
Crossed Swords and Curved Façade
The twin towers curve in perfect symmetry and rise 36 floors. Arabesque motifs run across every floor and a falcon-inspired water feature greets arriving guests. Four pool decks add themes from fishing sails to Silk Road tea gardens. A curved façade needs special gear so a curved monorail carries the cleaning machines.
Gold Entrance Canopies
Three entrance canopies steal the show. Their wavy gold form cantilevers almost 21 m at a height of 60 m.
Raffles Doha vs Fairmont Doha
Both hotels share one roof yet feel different. Raffles Doha occupies the north tower and Fairmont Doha holds the south. You can walk between them to try each other’s restaurants.
| Feature | Raffles Doha | Fairmont Doha |
|---|---|---|
| Style | All-suite | Contemporary with Qatari nods |
| Size | 132 suites | 362 rooms and suites |
| Service | Raffles butler service | Fairmont Gold lounge and butlers |
| Spa | 5 treatment rooms | 9 treatment rooms |
| Signature | Kaleidoscope lobby ceiling | 56.5 m chandelier |
| Extras | In-suite scent library | Climbing wall and kids’ pool |
The Famous Lobby
The lobby is the real headline. Gold mosaic wraps the curved walls and a 60 m atrium pours light onto a white piano. Even non-guests plan trips just for this photo-worthy lobby.
The 56.5 m Chandelier
Fairmont’s 56.5 m chandelier drops through the centre of the hotel. It uses 4,807 bulbs and glass parts and weighs over half a tonne. The glass spheres mimic pearls and create a gentle rain effect.
Raffles Kaleidoscope Ceiling
The ceiling at Raffles features shifting kaleidoscopic patterns that create a different atmosphere throughout the day. It shows clouds in daylight and stars after dark. Arabesque patterns wrap every arch and door. Take a moment to admire the ceiling, as its changing patterns reveal fresh details with every glance.
Dining Inside Katara Towers
Between the two hotels you get seven or more restaurants. Menus cover Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern and French flavours. It is world-class dining without leaving the building. Here are the names to know.
- L’Artisan: all-day dining at Raffles with an ice-cave look
- Masala Library by Jiggs Kalra: modern Indian cooking
- Provok Asian Project: sushi, Korean barbecue and teppanyaki
- Dôme Lounge: Fairmont’s lobby lounge under a giant glass cloche
Pools & Wellness
Four themed pool decks sit across the complex. Raffles’ spa offers eight treatment rooms and a signature Green and Gold Caviar Facial.. Fairmont’s spa has nine rooms plus hydrotherapy and an indoor pool. Experience suites add a private sauna and hammam for true spa and wellness fans.
Katara Hall & Events
Katara Hall sits between the two hotels and boasts the highest ballroom ceiling in Doha. It hosts weddings and gala dinners. During Ramadan the grand ballroom turns into a huge iftar tent.
During the iftar buffet, each food station presents specialties inspired by the hotels’ different restaurants. One tent lets you sample many kitchens at once. Book ahead for Ramadan evenings.
How to Visit Katara Towers
You cannot just stroll in. Katara Towers expects a booking at one of its restaurants or lounges before you enter the lobby. Staff confirm your reservation at the door. Booking in advance saves you a wasted trip.
Location & Getting There
Lusail Marina District is situated approximately 20 kilometres north of Doha. Downtown is roughly 20 minutes away by car. Taxis and ride-hailing apps work best because few attractions sit within walking distance.
Lusail City has 19 districts and began as a planned extension of Doha. The towers face the marina beside the Lusail Marina Promenade. Waterfront views come free with the address.
Nearby Places in Lusail
Plan short drives because the area is still filling in.

| Lusail Marina Promenade | Waterfront walks |
| Marina Twin Towers | Colourful neighbours on the marina |
| Place Vendome Mall | Big shopping and dining stop |
| Lusail Stadium | Venue of the 2022 World Cup final |

| Katara Cultural Village | Art and culture in West Bay |
Katara Cultural Village is a separate venue in West Bay. Don’t mix it up with the towers. Both make a great pairing if you want things to do in Lusail and Doha on one day.
